Summer Nationals Perfect Awards.
25th June 2024

£200 is up for grabs at this weekend's Summer Nationals event at Santa Pod Raceway courtesy of Eurodragster.com and our sponsors

This weekend's Bad Habit Racing Perfect Light Award has been reset to £50 after it was won by Sportsman ET racer Terence Attree at the Sportsman Nationals. The money will be paid to the first racer at the event to record a Reaction Time of 0.000 seconds. The Perfect Light Award is available in all classes during both qualifying and eliminations, but will only be awarded for the first Perfect Light of the event. The Perfect Light Award is presented in association with Cath and Tig Napier of Modurstang Pro ET team Bad Habit Racing.

Decals are not mandatory for the Perfect Light Award but we would appreciate it if Eurodragster.com decals are carried. Eurodragster.com decals are available in Signing On or from Eurodragster.com staff.

The Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award supported by Andy Hadfield  has been reset to £50 after it was won by 7.60 Heads-up racer Belinda Bull at the Sportsman Nationals. The money will be paid to the first racer at the event to run +0.000 on index or dial-in. The Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award is available in Peter Nee Super Pro ET, Modurstang Pro ET, Hutchinson & Dibley Sportsman ET, W.A. Watts Automotive Super Comp, Tony Morris Carburetors Super Gas, Pro Race Engineering VW Pro, Quantum Leap Racing VW Sportsman, Lucas Oil Junior Dragster, JKE Race Works 8.50 Bike, Atlantic Fluid Tech 9.50 Bike, Warpspeed Racing ET Bike and Eurodragster.com Junior Drag Bike. But will only be awarded for the first Perfect ET of the weekend. The Perfect ET Award is presented in association with Andy 'Fadster' Hadfield of the Twister Race Team in memory of his late wife Hayley.

Decals are not mandatory for the Perfect ET Award but we would appreciate it if Eurodragster.com decals are carried. Eurodragster.com decals are available in Signing On or from Eurodragster.com staff.

The Bob's Photo Finish Award, which is presented in association with Eurodragster.com sponsor Bob Roberts, will award £50 each to the racers involved in the closest finish of a green light and non-breakout race of eliminations at this weekend's event. At the FIA/FIM Main Event the Award was won by Peter Nee Super Pro ET racers Callum Swinchatt and Mark Coulsell with a finish line margin was  0.0013 seconds or 3.52 inches.

The closest race will be decided upon distance rather than time since, for example, 0.001 seconds at 230 mph is further than 0.002seconds at 110 mph. For this reason the official timing data will need to be consulted so the winners will be announced here on Eurodragster.com as soon as possible after the event and the winners will then be contacted for their preferred method of payment. The award will be paid on green light drag races only, and not on bracket races where there is a breakout.

To hide his career from his father, one of the greatest drag racers of all time and friend of the BDRHoF Bob Muravez, assumed the name of Floyd Lippencott Jr as he drove the Top Gas double engine Freight Train dragster to some classic wins - but no way he could he outrun the truth. Ron Hope.
22nd June 2024

We are sad to report the passing of international Fuel Altered legend Ron Hope on 21st June at the age of 80 at his home in Tennessee.

Ron grew up in Southern California during the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Ron had a keen interest in cars, especially racecars from when he was a young boy. Even as a teenager, he was active in the Dry Lakes Racing and Bonneville Land Speed Record Racing, working with legendary Ak Miller and Jerry Kugel.

In 1964, the 20-year-old Ron and partner Jerry Tucker set a Bonneville Land Speed Record in a C/Gas Roadster using Chrysler power in a 1932 Ford roadster. Ron’s racing interests carried him through the 1970’s campaigning a Chrysler powered Gas Dragster.

Ron’s love for Fuel Altereds began during the mid-60’s and the 1970’s when he was a team member on Don Green’s Rat Trap team. While living in Chicago, racers used his home as a base of operations.

Ron recreated The Rat Trap in 1995 in conjunction with Don Green and the new car first appeared at the California Hot Rod Reunion in 1996. Since its recreation Ron has been both owner and driver of the famed altered.

The Rat Trap, as we know it today, is the latest version of the original built in 1968 at the shop of chassis builder Dennis Watson. It is the latest in a series of Rat Trap Fuel Altereds. The previous two Rat Trap Fuel Altereds, owned by Don Green, ran from 1965 through 1968 and were conventional in design. The 1969 creation however was revolutionary.

It was designed with independent front suspension, a nitro burning Chrysler Hemi engine and a unique paint scheme. The name Rat Trap was the product of the “engine wars” of the 60’s when Chevrolet powered altereds (big block Chevrolet engines called “rat motors”) challenged the Chrysler powered altereds. The Rat Trap was one of four cars which made up the legendary Fuel Altered Tours of 1970-72. Other cars on that tour were Willie Borsch with the Winged Express, Pure Heaven II and the Magnificent 7.

Five Fuel Altereds, led by Rat Trap, were featured at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and at the 50th Anniversary of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Four of these very special cars also participate in match-races across the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. In 2014 and 2016, Ron took part in Dragstalgia and ran at the NitrOlympX at Hockenheim in 2016. In that year he was given a special award by the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame, of which he was an international ambassador.

During the autumn of 2015 the Rat Trap travelled to New Zealand to delight fans. Special t-shirts, promotional pictures and posters will help commemorate these events.

Ron lived in Franklin, TN with his wife of forty-five years, Dianne. Together, they raised six children, which have given them 18 grandchildren and made their home in Franklin, Tennessee. In addition to owner and full time driver of the Rat Trap AA Fuel Altered, he was also very active in Bonneville Land Speed Record events, driving a modified sports racer. Lord March and son Charlie, who were friends of Ron, completed licensing in one of Ron’s cars at Bonneville. Ron was a life member of the Bonneville 200mph Club,  and a member of the “Dirty 2 Club” for setting a record over 200mph at El Mirage.

We send our deepest condolences to Ron’s family including Dianne and Brian, granddaughter Victoria and grandson Michael, with racing colleagues and friends.

Tethys 20 years on.
22nd June 2024

Thanks to Tethys for sending Eurodragster.com this report on 20 years in Drag Racing, Tethys writes:

After spectating on the bank for years, 20 years ago this summer I decided to take the plunge and get out on track myself, so I booked a driving day with Paul Marston in Grumpy's Dodge. The day ended with a 10.87s timing slip and it's fair to say I was hooked. A deal was done, and I'd end up racing Grumpy for the next couple of years. Those were my first steps on a path that would ultimately end up with me in Top Fuel.

I was thinking about the fact that it had been 20 years and thought I should do something to mark the occasion. Much as I'd like to, I don't have the funds to get back out in Top Fuel just yet. But why not go back to where it all started? Seemed like as good an idea as any, so I got in touch with Paul, and I'll be racing Grumpy again at the Summer Nationals Santa Pod Raceway. It'll be great to be back out on track and back in Pro ET - particularly as Grumpy is now a couple of seconds quicker than 20 years ago.

Salakari team suffer road accident.
22nd June 2024

Team Salakari in the US suffered a terrible accident a couple of days ago. Here is the report from Jaska Salakeri on his Fabebook page. Jaska writes:

Thanks for all the hundreds of messages we have received in the last two days, we appreciate them. they have helped us survive these days.

What really happened in the accident and what damage and injuries did the accident cause.

The situation is not good in any way except that no one died.

The accident happened in a road work zone where the speed limit is 55mph, the road was in really bad condition and huge pumps, Hanski was driving the truck and noticed that there were sparks everywhere behind the truck, the trailer was thrown from side to side on the safety chains and was close to falling on its side, he managed to stop safely on the side of the road, Ari immediately said that this is a very dangerous place to stop and he and Elmeri moved the plastic traffic control cones closing the lane until the previous junction before they went to see how they could quickly hook the trailer back up and continue to the truck stop half a mile away to check more closely what happened.

Hanski took a flashlight and went behind the trailer to warn other traffic,

Elmeri and Ari went between the truck and the trailer to hook the trailer back up. Hanski noticed that the oncoming semi would not slow down or change lanes and was going to hit the trailer, but he didn't have time to warn his friends.

Terrible blow and bang to the trailer parts of the trailer filled with air and the road, Hanski's thought was that both died immediately.

He first shouted to Elmeri, who answered from thirty yards away from the bottom of the ditch, after which he shouted to Ari, whose answer was not heard, Elmeri climbed up from the ditch, they found what looked like a clothespin, which was revealed to be Ari, who was seriously injured, his right leg was missing from the ankle, and Ari did not react to anything.

Before the ambulance arrived, Elmeri and Hanski put a compression bandage on Ari's thigh with an extension cord so that he wouldn't bleed to dryness and gave first aid, which possibly saved Ari's life.

Elmeri has received thorough trauma and first aid training while serving in the Finnish Army, he did not panic or go into shock even though the situation was really chaotic.

Elmeri tried to call 911, but Prepay can't call 911, he called me at 5.09AM I immediately understood from his voice that something really serious had happened he said that a truck hit behind them at least 60mph and everything was destroyed he and Hanski are alive but there is no information about Ari, I asked him to share his location with me which was 40 miles from my hotel. I started driving to the place immediately. I got there and tried to get out of the car to check what happened to my son and my two friends, the police wouldn't let them out of the car and threatened to arrest me if I didn't continue the journey immediately, I didn't get any information, I had to keep going. Just like I had my worst nightmare.

Elmeri was really not well, he had lost consciousness involuntarily from the blow, both shoes had come off his feet, they still haven't been found, it's a total miracle that Elmeri wasn't injured very seriously or died either.
After a complete check-up, he was able to leave the hospital, the injuries are superficial bruises and the ligaments of the right thumb are stretched.

Ari was very badly injured. He is now receiving the best care possible at OU Hospital in Oklahoma City.

He has undergone numerous surgeries and will have to undergo several more in the coming days. At the moment, he has had his right leg amputated below the knee, the situation is also very uncertain with the fingers of his left hand, the doctors are doing everything to save the fingers because he is left-handed, in addition, all his ribs are splintered cervical vertebrae, broken clavicles, possibly also serious damage to the shoulders, but he is alive and not paralyzed or brain damaged.

Ari's recovery is now the most important thing, he and his wife Laura need all of our support now.

The racing equipment survived the accident surprisingly well. After the Chicago race we made a lot of good improvements so that we could also show how fast our bike is. Expectations were high and the feeling was great.

Our team will need a lot of support so that we can participate in the two remaining races.

We all here at Eurodragster wish the team and Ari a speedy recovery.

Colin Theobald Street Weekend report.
21st June 2024

Thanks to Colin Theobald, Santa Pod Raceways Sports commentator post on his Facebook page last his overview from the Street Weekend. Colin writes:

What can only be described as an epic adventure. Finding out that my dad had passed away in the early hours of Friday morning wasn’t how I envisaged it starting but I knew he would have wanted me to go for it. Didn’t get a run-on Friday so off to Skeggy with Bruce Kopasz in the Dirty Martini Porsche and support team and Billy Jones & Stacey Chandler with the Grumpy Griz Willys. Billy had a wiring issue a couple of miles in and said they’d catch up. Got to checkpoint one at 6.30pm, Humber Bridge about 9.45pm (what a place) Melbourne 12.30am. Knackered so slept in the car, bit cramped. One & done then hit the road with Bruce Kopasz. Brilliant but busy checkpoint three, steady run to Checkpoint 4, then a detour home for a few hours finally getting to Pod 9.45pm. Leisurely start the day today, first run the gears wouldn’t change. Thought it was driver error so went again, no gear shift. Spoke to a few other racers, should be a simple adjustment as car was spot on coming home.

Cannot believe how well the Camaro behaved, the only thing that let it down was the driver. Not switching on the electric fans caused two overheating episodes, overheated engine causing fuel vaporisation in Boston, just too much traffic at the end of the event the 55-year-old Camaro had covered 400 plus miles towing a trailer in all weather conditions and didn’t let me down at all, I just let the car down. The awesome Williams Bros. Racing team have built me an incredible car over the years and to come through Street Weekend 2024 without any major issues is testimony to their knowledge & skills, cheers guys.

The Santa Pod team deserve every single congratulation they receive, so much thought and planning went into the event, and they totally smashed it. Total respect to Keith Bartlett for being at every checkpoint, which speaks volumes especially as Tierp was running this weekend!! Melbourne totally delivered and they really deserved to be applauded, just watch that facility evolve.

Finally a few thanks to Bruce Kopasz, Jacob Kopasz and the whole Cerberus team, huge thanks for letting me each leg of the journey with you, you all made my weekend so much better. Thanks to those that sponsored me, I did it, completed the course and I’ll be in touch for your donations to the BDRHoF Benevolent Fund. Finally to every single competitor, team member, well-wisher, and event crew, thank you all so much for your support and care in what I can only describe as emotionally difficult times, but you all helped me through it. Love you all.

Street Weekend 3 next year, yep, I’m in but I’ll have to apply very nicely as I didn’t make the top fifty.

Rick Lorenzen.
19th June 2024

Eurodragster.com sponsor Dave Riswick of John Woolfe Racing has sent in this news that Rick Lorenzen Founder of the Lions Automobilia Foundation in Rancho Dominguez, California, has passed away. Dave writes:

In 2019, Lorenzen established the non-profit foundation and museum—which today encompasses nearly 100,000 square feet—to celebrate and preserve Southern California's unique car culture and motorsports history. Dave Riswick who grew up in Ricks back yard in West LA made the following announcement:

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our beloved founder, Rick Lorenzen.

Rick passed away peacefully on Sunday evening surrounded by family. Rick's vision was the guiding light in the creation of the Lions Automobilia Foundation [through] his leadership and steadfast commitment to preserving and sharing with others what he referred to as a "simpler time." Rick enjoyed telling stories about watching the races at Lions Drag Strip as a young man with his friends, and later meeting so many legends as they visited his treasured museum.  "As we navigate this challenging period, please know that I am committed to continuing Rick's vision and values.

My dedication will ensure that we remain strong and united, honoring Rick's legacy in every step we take," said Tami Lorenzen-Fanselow. Rick's passion, commitment and hard work have left a mark on all of us, and his legacy will continue to inspire us.

We here at Eurodragster were sad to hear of the loss of Rick Lorenzen and send our condolences to his family at this sad time.

Straightliners Round 4 report and winners.
19th June 2024

Congratulations to the winners of the first round of the 2024 Straightliners Championship round 4 last weekend at Melbourne Raceway.

Complete lists of ETs and speeds recorded on Sunday, including RWYB bikes, are available by clicking on this link. Thanks to Martyn Greathead for supplying Straightliners Championship results and points, which are available by clicking here.

After a rained-out Friday at Santa Pod the weather played ball for MELBOURNE SATURDAY. Runs got underway at 9.30am with 174 cars making it to the final venue, a large number arriving on Friday to enjoy a warm sunny evening mingling with the welcoming regulars enjoying the band, bar and catering facilities.

Though many drivers opted for just one run others put down several runs to get the best time possible.

It certainly worked for Michael Castle an initial 6.40sec run then saw Michael, with previous experience at MELBOURNE, post a new personal best run, 5.85sec 122mph second run to claim the number one spot and the only run in the 5s in his MK5 Cortina.

Rob Carter was another. Of his 3 runs in the VW Passat his 6.26sec at 122mph got him the number 2 spot.

Wayne Gill, XHYPE VW Golf R was only 0.11sec behind Rob grabbing 3rd with 6.37sec at 114mph.

Fourth position went to Simon Paul pedalling the Nissan GTR to a best 6.41sec with the highest speed of 124mph.

Light rain came as the last pair of STREETWEEKENDERS ran down the strip at 12 o’clock. When racing resumed after the rain enforced lunch break a few stragglers appeared to put in their runs one of whom was last year’s overall winner Andy Bond who had to change a rocker arm on the Chevy 210 but still managing a time good enough for 5th spot on 6.61sec at 113mph.

Altogether a fantastic day’s racing enjoyed by a large crowd.

Thanks must go to all the drivers and crews plus the hard-working MELBOURNE RACEWAY crew for putting on a brilliant event in association with SANTA POD RACEWAY,

Overall Winners for Melbourne:

  • NO MERCY SHOOTOUT: Terry Mountford (6.46/117mph) def. Ashley Hodgson (6.41/120mph)

Old School Stockers Retro Show report.
19th June 2024

Thanks to Kevin Melling for this report on the Retro Show at Santa Pod Raceway, Kevin write:

Seven of us had entered, which as last year was run as a ‘out of permit’ sub event, within the Sportsman Nationals. Stalwart OSS supporters Rod and Chris Spry brought along their two Kawasaki H2 triple’s, with Pete McGuiness fielding his diminutive, but quick little Kawasaki 500 H1 triple machine. Alan Smith and I had also entered our H2 Kawasaki two smoker, but more on that later. On the four-stroke side of things, Richard Peachey was raring to go as usual on his black Suzuki GS1000, as was our very own ‘Ice Cream Man’ Sean ‘BidBod’ Biddlecombe, with his tasty white and red Suzuki GS1000S. Rounding out the field it was great to see previous multiple championship winner Claire Rule back in the saddle for the first time since September 2022, following her road bike RTC early last year. Claire decided to ease back into things by testing on the Friday, and she hit the ground running with an initial solid 9.1 pass and followed that up with a brace of 8.7 runs. Alan Smith and I had also elected to do some testing with our Kawasaki H2 on the Friday, following some recent changes, but unfortunately, I managed to lunch the motor terminally on our second pass. Disappointing as these things are, sadly that’s racing, and we should be back in time for Dragstalgia.

So, following some Saturday morning showers, the program was a little delayed, but the six remaining competitors took to the track around 2pm for Q1, with the final Q3 session closing out all racing activity for the Saturday at just before 7pm. So, at close of those three Saturday qualifiers, the positions stood as follows:

  1. Claire Rule [email protected]
  2. Richard Peachey [email protected] (new pb)
  3. Rod Spry [email protected] (new pb, though not for long!)
  4. Sean Biddlecombe [email protected]
  5. Chris Spry [email protected]
  6. Pete McGuiness [email protected]

There was a fourth session on Sunday morning, but only Rod Spry making it to the line. He was incredibly pleased that he did though, managing to put his gorgeous red Paul Gast replica H2 into the eights for the very first time, with a sweet sounding [email protected] pass! This kept him in the number three spot, but now we had three riders in the eights!

First round draw pitted no.1 qualifier Claire, in a David and Goliath battle against No. 6 Pete on his tiny 500cc H1 triple. Claire showed no mercy though, and dispatched poor Pete to the trailer, running 9.37 to his loosing 11.87, with neither rider having their best runs. The good news is however, that Pete has plans to step things up a gear for 2025 fitting the larger Kawasaki H2 triple motor to his chassis, with work hopefully starting shortly. Next up was No. 3 Rod Spry on his now eight second H2, versus No. 4 Sean ‘BidBod’ Biddlecombe on the white/red GS1000S.

Unfortunately, Sean’s GS blew a carb off when attempting to start the motor in the burn out box, and so had to pull off to the side lines, watching Rod take the solo pass, with a very respectable 9.01. Last pairing was No. 2 Richard Peachey on the black GS1000, against no. 5 Chris Spry on the brown H2. It is worth mentioning that Chris had been chasing a misfire all weekend, and so was almost half a second off his usual performance. In a rare occurrence, both riders managed to red light, but with Richard having the lesser infringement in this instance, he took the win with an 8.92.

Semi-final pairings put Rod Spry on the H2 pitted against Richard on his GS1000. On paper this should be a close race, with both riders having put down 8.9 passes earlier in the day. As it turned out it was the closest race of our group, with Richard just cutting the better light by the tiniest of margins, with Rods H2 initially 60ft’ing into the lead, but with Richards stronger charge taking the win with a 8.86, to Rod’s loosing 8.94 (demonstrating his earlier 8 second pass was no fluke!) The opposite side of the elimination tree saw Claire take a bye run and put down a slightly off form 9.10 run.

And so, to the final match up of Richard and Claire, the top two qualifiers, both solid high eight second runners at this event, meant another close race was on the cards. However, with both riders staged, Richard’s bike died just before the sequence ran down, and so Claire took the win with an 8.85. Well done on the win Claire, and welcome back!

Round 2 Gasser Circus Showdown – Sportsman Nationals.
18th June 2024

Many thanks to Nick Brooke-Langham from The Gasser Circus for sending eurodragster.com this report of Round 2 of the Gasser Circus Showdown at the Sportsman Nationals, Santa Pod Raceway on 8th-9th June. Nick writes:

It is fair to say within the Gasser Circus driver group on Watts App, there was a bit of confusion when news of the cancellation of Retro was announced by Santa Pod. No fear the team at the Pod slotted us into the Springnationals and our first MSA event.

Saturday began bright and breezy, and partway through the morning rain made an unwelcome visit and although it hammered down for a while, as the sun replaced it the track crew worked their magic and dried the track. Just before 2pm, Gasser Circus qualifying got underway with 15 Gassers on the plot, many of these had ributes written on their car, as the Gasser Circus family had lost one of our own recently, Steve Dixon succumbing to Cancer. Steve used to pilot the High Roller Ford Falcon and him and his family regular racers until he fell ill. Missed by never forgotten.

First pair up were Sean ‘Chili’ Milsom in his ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ Morris van and alongside was yours truly in my ‘The Traitor’ Anglia. As we activated the tree, I left early leaving a red behind, meanwhile in the other lane Sean left the line but as they say that is all she wrote. A transmission issue halting the run and Sean’s participation in the weekends racing.

Next pair was a collection of bad, with Niamh Smith in her ‘Nogbad the Bad’ Austin Devon, and Andy Cobb in his Model A coupe ‘Bad to the Bone’ dialling 11.00, Niamh on a 11.90. Niamh initially had a problem lighting up her slicks but soon had the Austin with plumes of rubber smoke billowing at the rear. Andy had no such issues, but as the tree activated, he rolled the lights but stayed on it running a breakout with a 10.94, in the other lane Niamh was just two hundredths of her dial in with an 11.92.

The ‘Glenn & Glenn’ Austin Pickup then lined up with Steve Mathews in his Honky Tonkin 57. A big rolling burnout signalling his intentions. Steve choosing to dial 9.66 he ran 9.60 @ 136 mph a breakout pass with Sam running 10.36 @ 126 mph, another breakout having dialled a 10.55.

Ray Turner still celebrating owning his fifty-five for 40 years waited for Billy Jones in the ‘Grumpy Grizz’ Willys to finish an impressive rolling burnout. A near heads up race with Ray dialling 10.80 and billy with a 10.60, Ray went Red but still ran a 10.79 which was a breakout and Billy a 10.66

The Tri Chevy of Adam Kruczynski ‘The Not SO Mellow Yellow’ 55 dialling 11.38 with the ‘Short Fuse’ Fordson of Nick Hewison edging to the beams with 9.80 on the rear roof panel, at the end of the run it was a move to number 1 qualifier with a 9.90 from Nick. Adam stopping the clocks with a breakout 11.25.

Up next current Gasser Circus Champion Chris Layram in the’ Outa Gas’ Pop. Lining up next to him should have been Tony Pearson, and he finally did when he reversed back from another one of his epic rolling burnouts, the man did used to be a Funny Car driver! Ironically, Tony would be qualifying next to the Pop he built for Chris.

Chris left ahead of Tony and would stop the clocks with a breakout 10.23 on a 10.25 with Tony recoding an 11.30 121 mph on a 10.40. The Dale Snoke brothers lined up next with their cars the result of the skilful work of Dale in California. Simon Prest incredibly lucky to make the first round of qualifying having discovered that awful sinking feeling and realisation as he prepared to unload his Mercury Comet that he had left the keys for the Comet at home. A round trip of around 3 hours, the rain saving him as he arrived back just as the class was called.

The other Snoke built car being Brian Gibson in his ‘Identity Crisis’ Dodge Dart Simon dialling 11.00 and Brian 11.45. This may have only been qualifying but when these two-run side by side bragging rights are available and so it was as they stayed door handle to door handle with Simon getting their first with 11.02 and Brian a breakout 11.40.

Top five after round one was.

  1. Nick Hewison
  2. Niamh Smith
  3. Simon Prest
  4. Nick Brooke-Langham
  5. Steve Matthews

Round 2 Qualifying

Glenn & Glenn with Sam Glenn at the wheel ran 11.18 on a 10.28 with him occupying 14th on the ladder. Brian on an 11.38 ran 11.59 placing him eighth.

Adam Kruczynski in left lane and myself in the right came to the line, I had dialled 11.77 Adam 11.23, and he ran 11.33 he was now fifth. I ran 11.77 with an eight and moved up to Number 1 qualifier. Sharing that moment back in the pits with my daughter Patsy was wonderful.

Billy Jones showed 10.60 but as the slicks crinkled a red bulb glowed and the screens showed a -008-reaction time, and they also confirmed a 10.66 pass. In the right lane Nick Hewison was on it and a good straight run gave him 10.07 which would see him finally occupy number 7.

Steve Matthews was shooting for a 9.65 and hopefully a straight run, he got that, and the gantry showed a 9.68.  Simon was hunting down an 11.00 and this pass gave him a breakout with a 10.94.

Following the Round 1 problems with Sean Milsom’s transmission, it was surprising and pleasing to see him in the fire up road and even better edging to the line. Those with eagle eyes may have noticed that Sean had driven around the water, as he had lost first gear, but it appeared second was still hanging around, so might as well give it ago. Sean was on voyage of discovery and alongside him Tony Pearson was aiming for a better reaction time and a run of 10.40.

The cars left together with Sean’s launch bereft of any wheels up action, but he was holding his own against Tony who had also crafted various parts of Sean’s Morris, which crossed the line first recording a 10.62 @ 129mph with no burnout and Tony running an 11.13.

Chris Layram up next dialling 10.10 with Andy Cobb showing 10.90 as the lights dropped both drivers left hard with both having photographer pleasing mirrored wheelies with Chris up and to the left and Andy a wheelie with the body torqueing to the right before both coming down and running side by side at the top Chris had a 10.35 and Andy a 10.93 which moved him up to 3rd.

Final pairing had Niamh in ‘Nogbad the Bad’ with 11.90 on the orange back window and Ray in ‘Green Onions’ displaying a 10.79. Both cars leaving together and having straight runs something Niamh welcomed having experienced Gasser death wobble at a recent test session. The gantry screens told the tail Niamh running 12.32 placing her 10th and Ray a 10.89 climbing to number 6.

Top five was now: -

  1. Nick Brooke-Langham
  2. Steve Matthews
  3. Andy Cobb
  4. Billy Jones
  5. Adam Kruczynski

3rd Qualifying

AS 6:30 ticked by the end of the fire up road was littered with Gassers, first up Simon Prest in ‘The Rocket’ with me alongside in ‘The Traitor’, we left together but at mid track the Anglia decided it wanted to take a short cut to the pits and I got out of it. Simon running the 11.00 he had previously been chasing but as it came with a two, he would end up sixth.

Adam Kruczynski on 11.25 and Chris Layram 10.20 Adam pulled a red but and also ran a breakout by one thousandth of a second with an 11.24, in the opposite lane Chris decided to use his transbrake for the first time it worked as he took the number qualifier position with a 10.20 with a 7, another 1 thousandth taking it.

With the sun casting a fantastic golden glow as it sank lower in the sky Steve Matthews had 9.61 on his ‘Honky Tonkin’ 57 and Brian Gibson 11.39 on his ‘Identity Crisis’ Dodge Dart. Both cars left hard and at the end of the action Brian had hit 11.41 which moved him up to number 5 and Steve with a 9.68 up to number 7.

Ray Turner chose 10.80 and when he left it was arrow straight whilst Sam Glenn in the right lane had to contend with the Austin pickup leaping towards the wall on the right, despite this momentary blip he still ran 10.57 and Ray had posted a 10.84 good enough 9th Sam into 12th.

Next up Tony Pearson in the Guzzler 10.40, with Billy Jones on a 10.62. As the bulbs lit the cars left, one with its front wheels up and one with them planted firmly against the track. Billy the one keeping all for tyres in contact with the track, but the car pulled to the right, then as he corrected it the Willys became loose, and Billy did the sensible thing a backed out of it with Tony charging down to stop the timers with an 11.13.

With ‘no first gear Milsom’ back out again he had again gone around the water and edged toward the line, with a burning out Nick Hewison soon joining him, but Billy’s earlier movement in the lane required further inspection by the track crew. Both cars directed to back up. They obliged but Sean went back through the water this meant that his crew had to dry off the slicks before given the fire up signal by Ian Marshall, they hoped they had done an excellent job.

Sean was chasing a 10.57 but pulled a red followed by stumble off the line and he took it easy on his ailing transmission finishing the day with 2 gears and an un customary 11.84 – Nick dialled 9.88 and left so hard the Fordson moved towards the wall, but he soon had a bit more daylight between the car and the wall as he bombed down the quartermile and dipped into a breakout with a 9.87 to his dialled 9.88.

Top five was now.

  1. Chris Layram
  2. Nick Brooke-Langham
  3. Nick Hewison
  4. Niamh Smith
  5. Brian Gibson

Sunday promised a good day’s racing and the 7am alarm call came bang on time, however instead of a beep of an alarm clock it was the most welcome sound of squealing rubber as the track crew began prepping the strip.

This sound meant the track was dry and racing lay ahead. Opening the caravan door, we were greeted with an overcast and gloomy day, but a bad day drag racing beats any day at work.

Sunday normally commences with Eliminations but first up we had our final qualifying a brief summary as the top 8 remained unchanged and the few movers were from 8 down with Adam in his 55 Chevy up 2 to 9th, Billy down 2 to 12th, Sam in the Austin pickup down 2 to 14th and Tony up 1 to 13th.

Casualties from qualifying were Niamh and her Austin suffering valve train damage on third qualifying and in the same session Andy Cobb in his Model A suffering a damaged clutch. Tony Pearson could not make the call for Eliminations, so there would be a few bye runs.

Eliminations

First pairing had ray Turner ‘Green Onions’ 55 Chevy going for a 10.85 against Nick Hewison in his 9.92 dialled Fordson ‘Short Fuse’.

By courtesy of his dial in Ray left first closely followed by Nick this turned into a great race with Ray ahead until about ¾ track with Nick powering past and not breaking out with a 9.98 and Ray a 10.94.

The first bye run next, and the number 1 qualifier Chris Layram had this. He ran a wheels up launch with an excellent 10.30 @ 127mph.

Honky Tonkin 57 with Steve Mathews at the wheel prepared to take on Sam Glenn. Sam leaving first with an arrow straight launch, but Steve had his old nemesis return with ‘Honky Tonkin’ pulling hard to the left, Steve stayed in it as the car came good and he was off after Sam who was thundering down the strip but a tad too hard with a breakout by Sam with a 10.65 on a 10.68 Steve taking the win and running a 9.67.

Billy Jones Willys edged to the line after copious amounts of door fanning from his crew chief Stacey to extract the burnout smoke. In the opposite lane Brian Gibson edged to the beams. With the cars at the line and tree active Brian loaded up the brakes and built the revs, as he let his foot off the brakes, he lit the red bulb with a -0602 still running a 11.42, but he was now on the trailer, Billy advancing.

Not So Mellow 55 and The Traitor Anglia were next up. I had sat behind Brian and watched him light the red, I told myself not to do the same. I now had 11.70 on the back window. Adam had 11.25 on his, and as yellow followed yellow I was off and had redlit the win going to Adam who had also pulled a cherry, but fractionally after me!

Sean Milsom was on a bye, and he does not know how to take it easy, putting in another superb second gear run with a stout 10.64.

Simon Prest in The Rocket Mercury was also on a bye with him running 11.06 on an 11.00.

Quarter finals.

It was time for a bit of Ford and Mercury action, with Nick Hewison and Simon Prest ready to see who would go through to the Semi Final. 9.92 for Nick while Simon had his constant companion 11.00.  Simon knew he had to cut a good light and it was for Nick, as Simon cutting it a tad too much planting a cherry on the tree Nick advancing to the Semi-final. Simon still running 11.00!

A 10.62 for Sean ‘Chili’ Milsom and he was still nursing his transmission which remarkably was still getting the job done despite no burnouts and first gear. All good things however come to an end even when running a 10.62 on a 10.62! This was because Steve Mathews had a holeshot win with a 0.054 to Sean’s 0.265. Steve moving onto the final and Sean hitting the trailer along with the other drivers who had lost.

Chris Layram had the racing gods on his side, as he had another bye but still pulled a wheelie off the line with 10.20 on the rear of the car and ran an on form 10.21 @ 129 mph.

Tom Kruczynski, Adams son guided him into the burnout box, as they prepped for taking on Billy Jones in ‘Grumpy Grizz’ Willys. Adam leaving first as he had dialled 11.25, Billy 10.59, as the cars left the line the boards showed that Billy had pulled a stonking reaction time with a 0.0016 the cars were rapidly side by side and stayed that way down the track, at the line there was only half a car in it with Billy taking the win with a 10.66 to Adams 11.35.

Semi Final

The battle of the dark/burgundy cars with Steve Mathews ‘Honky Tonkin’ 57 dialling 9.59 coming to the line against Billy Jones Willys Coupe who had dialled a second difference with a 10.59.  Billy left with 0.121 reaction and Steve was soon giving chase with a 0.110 reaction time. This was another fantastic drag race and at the top end Steve advanced to the final with a winning 9.61 to Billy’s losing 10.64.

Having had two bye runs, Chris found himself in an unusual position as in the other line was another Gasser, and it was in the form another Ford from the same era as his, a Fordson in the hands of the very consistent Nick Hewison in his ‘Short Fuse’ Fordson. Chris revisited a favoured dial of 10.62 and Nick placing 9.92 on the rear of his. As the tree activated we had a green light race and what a race it turned out to be with both men with their right foot flat to the floor not wishing to give an inch to the other Gasser, as they rapidly approached the gantry they were side by side, when they reached the finish line the clocks told the tale of Chris winning in his ‘Outa Gas’ Pop with a 10.22 @ 129 mph but Nick had broken out with a 9.90 at 124mph.

The final was now set, Chris in his Pop would be burning out next to Steve Matthews in his ‘Honky Tonkin’ 57.

The burnout area was populated with Gasser Circus drivers and crew as the protagonist’s burnt out under the guidance of their respective crews.

Side by side stonking burnouts set the tone for the final but would it live up to the superb racing seen in the quarter and semi-finals?

Chris had his ‘fan’ club helping to swing the Pops doors to assist the burnout smoke to exit. This complete and under the direction of Ian Marshall the Gassers edged into the beams, Steve lit the top bulb and waited on Chris, he then lit the top bulb and instantly lit the second bulb, Steve followed and we were set, the tree dropped and Chris moved first with a wheels up launch giving full employment to the wheelie bars, within an instant Steve launched but his wheelie had a much lower angle of attack. The Gassers at 60 foot were side by side and so it continued as they closed in on the finish line there was nothing in it, we all waited as this superb final came to its close, the win lights going on in Steve s lane.

For those interested in the numbers Chris dialled 10.20 and ran 10.24 with a reaction time of 0.206 and the victorious Steve a 9.59 running a 9.65 taking it his reaction time of 0.105.

5 years after winning his last round of racing, Steve and his dedicated crew were left to celebrate a fine and exhilarating win and getting their hands on the fantastic Neil Melliard winner’s pin. An epic win for a racer who has been through adversity as his fifty-seven went through several engines.

A superb weekend of Gasser racing was made possible by Santa Pod and their superb crew on and off the strip and our sponsors whom we are most grateful for their continued support, Neil Melliard’s Modern Lettering, Rocket Racing Team, Serck Services and Tom Margesson.

The Gasser Circus can next be seen racing at Dragstalgia the first weekend in July.

Max Frost on Street Weekend.
17th June 2024

Santa Pod Raceway's Event Coordinator Max Frost announced on his Facebook page about the Street Weekend 2024, Max writes:

What a weekend it had everything, and the stories are going to be insane. For us, following Owen Forrest down country roads, lighting his way into Melbourne, to him getting lost down a dead end, watching him reverse his little trailer and then watching it bounce its way through Derby – Quite impressive and hilarious.

The storm at Great Northern Classics was biblical and hearing the stories from the likes of Tom Atkinson afterwards with the struggles on the road makes you appreciate that this is not easy!

Great to see Colin Theobald out on the road in his Camaro, continuing to raise money for the BDRHoF Benevolent fund in these circumstances, amazing. Colin, we have all been with you my friend, every single mile of the journey.

To be sat at the Humber Bridge toll listening to Rob Carter's VW behind you Callum Pudge and I were genuinely giddy, and then ruined the moment with laughter with the flappy doors. Sorry Rob!

There are so many more stories, I cannot even begin to think of what more to put.  To see everyone out on the road, Callum and I were blessed. The pure luck needed to capture just one rolling shot and we got LOTS. I think you will agree, Callum’s road shots are some of the best drag & drive photos in the world. There is just something about chasing down race cars, holding up traffic to get the shot. Just another incredible experience.

It has been a headache to organise sometimes, but do you know what, it is the best event we do – Sorry Doorslammers. Watching the entire community come together is something to behold. Racers changing their entire travel plans to swap direction and make haste to someone in need. I genuinely do not think you would get this in any other sport.

So, to every single competitor, their support crews, the track crews and staff at both Santa Pod Raceway and Melbourne Raceway, the checkpoints, the staff at those checkpoints – All of you. Thank you. Once again, you have reignited my passion and once again I can wholeheartedly say, I love my job

Thanks for Remco Scheelings from Drag Racing Europe for sending in this article from Tierp Arena of the FIA and FIM-E update on day two of qualifying.

Duncan Micallef, Sandro Bellio, David Vegter and Jimmy Ålund number one qualifiers at Tierp Arena

At the first day of qualifying for the SpeedEvents Internationals four drivers from Sweden took the lead in the four categories of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. As expected there were numerous improvements on day two with dramatic changes in the qualifying order as a result. In Top Fuel Duncan Micallef, from Malta, stormed into the number one qualifying position, Sandro Bellio, from Belgium, took over the lead in Top Methanol and Dutchman David Vegter stormed into the lead in Pro Modified. Jimmy Ålund (Pro Stock) was the only driver who was able to remain in the number one position and the only number one qualifier from Sweden. Thus Micallef, Bellio, Vegter and Ålund will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s eliminations at round two of the 2024 FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Tierp Arena.

BDRHoF's 2024 Grand Dragstalgia Auction.
13th June 2024

The British Drag Racing Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its fourth annual Dragstalgia Grand Auction taking place inside the event’s Historic Marquee, situated pitside near the grandstand. The auction features a wealth of artefacts and artworks generously donated to help in the raising of essential funds for the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame and its Benevolent Fund.

An array of items from the USA has been collected by Tony Thacker. Major donations from the home front include a Paul Whitehouse Art painting of Commuter and, from Jon Benn, a 125cm x 47cm poster of Commuter which has never been displayed. From the USA, there’s a copy of Carl Olson’s book Racing Through Life, autographed by the man himself. Donations from Mooneyes include a special MOON "Far-Out" table lamp and T-shirt. There are multiple donations from the estate of the late BDRHoF Member, Roger Gorringe.

These are just some of the highlighted items but there are many others, including a host of books, posters, T-shirts, limited-edition and signed prints – too many items to list individually. And there will be plenty more on general sale too.

During the lead-up time to Dragstalgia we shall be highlighting all this year’s auction items here on Eurodragster as well as on the BDRHoF Facebook page and website.

How to Bid: The auction takes place on Friday afternoon and all day on Saturday, closing promptly at 5pm. Visit the Historic Marquee to have a look at what’s on offer. If you see an item of interest, ask for the bid sheet relating to the numbered item to place your bid. Keep coming back throughout the auction period to check if anyone has outbid you. You can re-bid as many times as you like until the auction closes at 5pm on Saturday. Winning bidders will be notified by text after 5pm on Saturday and items can be paid for and collected by 6pm Saturday or until 4pm on Sunday. We can accept card payments.

The Hall of Fame will be pleased to welcome you to its display in the Historic Marquee from 2pm until 5pm on Friday and from 10am on Saturday and Sunday. The Dragstalgia Grand Auction takes place with the kind permission of Santa Pod Raceway. The Hall of Fame is indebted to all those who have so kindly donated items.

Street Weekend preview.
12th June 2024

After it's debut year in 2023 “Street Weekend” is back for 2024 to find out who’s really king of the street. In a nod to the coveted Hot Rod Drag Week in the USA, we’re looking at a similar format where drivers need to set and submit a time at Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire before Driving around 200 miles to Melbourne Raceway in York to set a time on day 2 and then returning again and setting a time on the 3rd day.

Track conditions will be different on each day, starting on a freshly prepped track at Santa Pod on day 1, an unprepped 1/8-mile challenge at Melbourne on day 2 and finally back at Santa Pod on day 3 after the track's had a full day of rwyb.

In summary, we’re looking at around 400 miles on the road across 3 days whilst also recording a time on track on each one of the days. We all know that Street Eliminator cars are probably the quickest street legal cars on track in the UK right now, but can they really handle that many road miles? This is the competition to find out!

The winner will be determined by the lowest Total ET across the 3 days. For example, a 10 second ET on day 1, 6 second ET on day 2 and 9 second ET on day 3 gives a total time of 25 seconds. Failure to make a pass on any given day will result in a penalty time of 30 seconds at Santa Pod Raceway and 15 seconds at Melbourne Raceway. Failure to complete the route and sign on at the track on any of the 3 days will result in disqualification.

Checkpoints have been appointed along the way which you must visit to complete the allocated route.

Racers can access the instructions and directions as mentioned on Santa Pod Raceway website by clicking here.

You can check the entry list for the Street Weekend by clicking here.

STP Sportsman Nationals - racer report.
12th June 2024

We like to thank Brett Cordelle for sending Eurodragster.com this report from the STP Sportsman Nationals last weekend, Brett says:

We all arrived Thursday evening and set up with little Lando coming to his first event of the year. Then on Friday was just getting everything finalised with the pit set up and making sure the bike was ready for qualifying Saturday morning.

Saturday morning came and we made our way down for the first qualifying session. Bit of a confusion with my dad as we turned the fuel on for the bike, but not the tap for the nitrous, so I said next time we will do it before we go down. I took the body work off and turned the tap on. Well, I thought I did but turned the on fuel tap off, which was the only one on, I pulled up to the line put it on the two step and instant die off the hit but was able to keep it running and coasted down the track.

Q2. We made sure we turned everything on this time before we left the pit the bike left hard off the line shifted to 2 was fine but it wouldn’t shift to third when I wanted it to but it finally shifted but we had a cross wind and about half way up the track the wind hit the front and pushed me left so to the wall I decided to just shut off and coast through the line with a 9.7. As we got back and went over the bike, we found out that we melted number 2 and number 4 spark plug so we had to put some new ones in and try again.

Q3. The bike left hard again this time shifting to two was fine but going to third to fourth when I hit the button nothing happens but finally changes gear but not when I want it to. Dialled in a 9.35 but went 9.23 with shifting issues again. We took it to the pits and found out again that i had melted 2 and 4 plugs again so Alan came to adjust the settings on the nitrous to see if that would help.

Q4. As it has all day it pinged off the line slightly better with the third shift, but it would not do into fourth top end. Dialled in a 9.20 and ran a 9.28 which only got me 10th in the qualifying results. Same old as we got back did the check over and we only did number 2 plug this time but still worrying that I am going to damage the motor.

Round one. I was supposed to face Pete Harrison but unfortunately, he had broken so I took this run to run it flat out to see what we would dial in for round two. Dial in a 9.20 again and the bike left well with a personal best 60ft and new personal best on ET with a 9.18 so I was happy with that. The gear changes were still not when I wanted them, but it shifted quicker than it had. But unfortunately, we did number 2 and number 4 plugged again.

Round two. I had Robbie Dobbie which I no he runs close to his numbers but luckily for me he red lit so I took the win but I didn’t realises at the start so I took the run as it was a race and the bike did not run right at all so we got it back checked it again and guess what more plugs were melted.

Round three. I had Casey Holgate. She dialled in a twelve flat I knew I had to wait for my tree to drop a couple of seconds later. It was a green light race the bike left good still shifting issues but I pulled a .1 to Casey’s .6 on the tree and I passed her top end and took the win nice race though took it back to the pits and played with the settings again as we did 2 and 4 plugs again but with you going round by round we didn’t have enough time to do a proper go through so we just had a put plugs in again and get it ready for the next round.

Round four. Well a surprise for me is that I didn’t know but the winner of that round had a bye in the semis so it meant I was going to the final so we quickly went down just the break the beams as the bike was still really hot and we had issues that we need to sort.

We got back played with things put new plugs in and a fresh bottle and headed to the final.

The final. I faced Gary Hester which he was number one qualifier and he had been on his numbers all weekend, so I knew that the bike and me had to do the best run of the entire weekend. But as we went to tune the nitrous bottle on, we could hear a leak on the fitting but as we were ready to go, we had no time to change it, so we just had to go for it. As I pulled up the line the bike died but misfired but stayed on which concerned me. We both staged I stuck it on the two step and as the light went green, I dropped the clutch for the bike to instantly die off the line which I already knew that was game over. Well, done to Gary as he had been phenomenal all weekend and deserved that win.

So yes, it has been one of the most stressful race weekends we have had for a long time especially as my sister made it to the final as well, so my dad bless him was here there and everywhere.

Big thanks to my amazing wife and kids who support what I do and make it possible. Phil Cordelle as I truly would not be riding this bike without all the hard work you have put in to get it so where it is now.

Scott Collier, Jerry Collier, Baz Rathbone and Alan Davis for helping me between rounds trying to sort the issues out we shall try again in 3 weeks’ time but for now we have some fixing to do.

Thank you to Julian Hunt for some amazing photos I am getting them framed.

If there any companies out that wants to donate some sparks plugs, I would be grateful.

UK Nostalgia Superstock - Sportsman Nationals report.
11th June 2024

Thanks to Niamh Smith for her report on the UK Nostalgia Superstock at the Sportsman Nationals event last weekend, Niamh writes:

Bit of a quiet one for UK NOSTALGIA SUPERSTOCK this weekend at Sportsman Nationals but our racers didn’t let that slow them down!!

A little bit of rain put us back a bit on Saturday, but after that it cleared up and we had 4 qualifiers through to Sunday morning, where Mick Sharpe came in the top spot after Q4, having ran a 9.9036 on a 9.90 index!

Over the course of the day, the field was whittled down to just 2 cars; the Charger of Adrian Portelli and the Impala of Steve Lloyd.

It was Adrian who took the win however, continuing his success after accruing the most points at the rained off Springspeed Nationals earlier in the year. Things are looking good for Mr Portelli! He now will have a bounty on his head for the National Finals.

There was also a Big Bracket class this weekend, in which two NSS racers entered, and both were successful in this too! Mick Sharpe, our number 1 qualifier, won the title, with Don Scott coming in the runner up position.

Congratulations to Adrian Portelli and Steve Lloyd, as well as Mick Sharpe and Don Scott!

FIA European Drag Racing Championship round 2 at Tierp Arena.
10th June 2024

Thanks for Remco Scheelings from Drag Racing Europe for sending in this article on the preview for Tierp of the FIA classes on 13-16th June

After a weather affected start at Santa Pod Raceway, the FIA European Drag Racing Championship continues with the SpeedEvents Internationals at Tierp Arena, Sweden. Due to the rain, no winners were crowned in England, so let’s hope the full points and trophies can be awarded after a great race weekend at Tierp Arena. The first round of the FIA European Championship was an indication who might be the title favourites this season, but with four rounds to go and a tough competition, anything can happen.

The Trakbytes website update.
9th June 2024

Chris from Trakbytes has announced the latest update on their website and remains proudly 20 years behind the times. Chris writes:

This time there are 30 new additions or updates between June 1966 and the most recent entry, 2004’s Main Event at Santa Pod. Amongst the racers at Santa Pod’s opening round of the 2024 FIA Championship recently were many names that were also there 20 years ago, including Andy Robinson with his Studebaker Pro Mod, Peter Wacker, who was running his first six second passes, Peter Kunc and Michael Malmgren. Jon Webster was setting new personal bests in Top Fuel and Jimmy Alund was setting new European records in Pro Stock. There were new records in Top Fuel as well, and many people will remember Freddy Fagerstrom leaving one of his doors lying on the track… 2004 also sees the addition of details of Dave Wilson’s continuing campaign in Top Alcohol in the USA.

This update includes a couple of very detailed entries from Long Marston in 1975, submitted by long-time contributor Jerry Cookson. These cover the beginnings of the NDRC (Midlands) association with the venue. Another regular contributor, Clive Rooms, has continued to fill in some of the gaps in the 1980’s sections with details from a number of meetings at Avon park, York, Aintree and of course Santa Pod.
The Hall Of Fame files for Tony Densham, Dennis Priddle, Clive Skilton and the Pages have all been updated, as has the Competitor Index. This page now contains 2174 names of racers through the years, and is the place to start if you are looking for information on a particular rider or driver.

I’m always keen to hear from anyone who has new material to add to the archives. Programme covers, meeting details, entry lists, personal bests, or any landmark events that have been overlooked are all welcome.

You can see all their stories and updates on the Trakbytes website by clicking here.

Scotland calling all drag racers.
8th June 2024

Ed Foster contacted Eurodragster to with this article, Ed is a distinguished motoring writer who visited Santa Pod while working for Motor Sport magazine. Now he farms in Fife, Scotland, and has established a monthly gathering for all manner of motor vehicles, ‘Bacon & Brakes’, which is growing fast. What are they missing? Well, drag racers for a start. Could there be any drag racing folk flyin’ around in Fife? If so, they will be made most welcome – and from anywhere further afield for that matter. Ed says:

Bacon and Brakes was started in October 2019 as a friendly local meet up for car and 'bike enthusiasts at the motorsport-themed Rhynd Café near St Andrews in Scotland. Sixteen cars turned up on that first rainy morning, and then COVID hit. We reopened the doors again in the late summer of 2021 and numbers rose quickly... Today, we welcome over 500 cars, motorcycles, trucks, fire engines, tricycles and even tractors on a monthly basis. At the last meeting on 5th May, 2024, we counted nearly 700.

We've now introduced a Best in Show competition alongside studio photography, an Autotest and we will soon welcome the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards with Jackals, HMGs and possibly an Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (known as 'The Wrecker!'). June saw our first Formula 1 car attend (the 1989 Arrows A11) and it was started up for everyone at 11am.

We have an off-road course on site, as well as the café and food stalls. Next door, we run the Scottish Clay Shooting Centre that puts on clay shooting (obviously!), archery and axe throwing. Also have the Rhynd Farmhouse that's available for rent at this link

Many have tried to create a big motorsport event in Scotland and it's not easy. I'm a firm believer that we're best suited to smaller, regular events. However, these must be more than 20 cars parked in an NCP car park...! That's why we organise content around the event, whether that's the F1 car, autotests or the off-road course. It seems to be working well so far.

Diamond anniversary is not all that Dragstalgia has to offer.
7th June 2024

Santa Pod Raceway has announced this press release on Dragstalgia event at Santa Pod Raceway 5th-7th July 2024:  Now 60 years since 1964’s 1st International Drag Festival kick-started the motorsport known as drag racing in Britain, the diamond anniversary of this archetypal event will be a focal point when Dragstalgia takes place at Santa Pod early next month. Yet that’s not all that Dragstalgia has to offer. Europe’s biggest historic drag race celebration embraces many ingredients harking back to the sport’s ‘golden age’ – vintage racing machinery in abundance, of course, on two wheels as well as on four, but vintage music, fashion and style too. It’s a party weekend for all – you don’t have to be of ‘a certain age’ to enjoy the full flavour.

The arrival of two dragsters from America – Mooneyes and Dos Palmas, reflecting the drag race tradition of naming rather than numbering cars – will be an anniversary focus, but they are not the only vehicles crossing the Atlantic.

Fuel Altereds – rather like Can-Am cars in circuit racing – enjoyed a brief 1960s flowering before the mainstream moved on but are nowadays a popular and revered staple of the historic racing scene. A rematch between two latter-day FAs, powered by supercharged, nitromethane-burning V8s, will be a Dragstalgia highlight as Randy Bradford’s Fiat Topolino-bodied machine from America takes on Britain’s Nick Davies and his Austin Bantam, Havoc. Bradford last competed at Santa Pod in 2016. In 2017, Davies shipped Havoc to the USA and beat the Americans at their own game, bringing home the season trophy.

Pre-1980 is Dragstalgia’s order of the day. There’ll be a loud and lairy concoction of Nostalgia Funny Cars, Fuel Altereds and Front-Engined Dragsters, on methanol and nitro, mixing it up in a ‘cannonball’ format, while throwback racing groups such as Outlaw Anglias, the Gasser Circus, Supercharged Outlaws, the Wild Bunch and the Willys Wars enjoy their weekend in the limelight. While entries continue to roll in, the list already boasts 68 Nostalgia Superstockers. Who knew the UK had so much vintage American iron race-ready and raring to go?

On two wheels, expect a healthy turnout as the National Sprint Association corrals its finest and fastest old-school bikers, while the legendary US machine Hogslayer – the twin-Norton mount of TC Christenson famous for scourging the Harley-Davidson ‘hogs’ on dragstrips across America in the 1970s – will emerge from its latter-day retirement home, Solihull’s National Motorcycle Museum, to bark down the strip once more some half a century after its formidable heyday.

Also of rarity value, Martin Hill brings out his seldom-seen FireForce 2 Jet Funny Car to light up the show.

Alongside the track will be an array of distinguished drag race machinery on static display – CommuterTudor RoseMotovation: names calculated to bring a tear to the eye of anyone old enough to have watched them in their prime (and not just from the nitro fumes) – together with some ‘cracklefest’ fire-ups.

Of particular note will be the three known surviving Allard dragsters. The Allard Chrysler, the machine credited as Britain’s first dragster constructed by Sydney Allard in 1961, will be on weekend leave from its home at Beaulieu’s National Motor Museum, flanked by the last remaining pair of Allard Dragons, the machines built by the Allard Motor Company in the mid-1960s and each now privately owned.

The British Drag Racing Hall of Fame’s annual Grand Auction brings a host of rare artefacts and memorabilia from Europe and America into the public eye. There are club displays, and the Autoglym Show & Shine competition burnishes the pinnacle of automotive finery. If more thrills are called for, seek out the classic Ken Fox Wall of Death motorcycle show.

Come for a day and you’ll get an outstanding programme of events on and off the track, with live music in the Vintage Hub featuring bands and DJs. Come for two or even all three days and you’ll experience the full festive atmosphere. Bring your tent, your van or your motorhome and your overnight stays are free with multi-day tickets, with The Ultimate Classic Rock Show and the Dragstalgia Beer & Cider Festival all part of the bargain among the attractions vying for your attention.

Dragstalgia 2024 takes place at Santa Pod Raceway, near Wellingborough NN29 7XA, from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th July. For full event information and to book tickets, visit this link or telephone 01234 782828. As ever, access to the pits is free for a close-up view of Dragstalgia’s unparalleled array of historic racing machinery.

Christiansen, Lymant and King win, but rain defeats the rest of the FIM-E Main Event.
6th June 2024

Thanks to Remco Scheeling for posting an article about the FIA/FIM-E Main Event on www.dragracingeurope.eu . You can read the full story by clicking here.

To complete a frustrating meeting, rain eventually won much of eliminations day with a series of downpours disrupting and ultimately curtailing the opening round of this year’s FIM-E championship. This also included a shift to eighth mile running after the first set of eliminations due to problems drying the shutdown area, and then a final set of the wet stuff ended proceedings with only three classes completed

Simon Hayward moving forward with Houndog.
5th June 2024

Nostalgia Funny Car racer Simon Hayward was at Santa Pod Raceway last weekend to test his recreaation of the legendary 1970s Houndog Funny Car.

The team wrote: "What a weekend at Santa Pod., it's been a long time coming, but we got down the strip! It was exactly 50 years ago Nobby Hills debuted the former Paula Murphy Plymouth Duster and christened it Houndog 7. Back in 1974 it was Owen Hayward behind the wheel. 50 years later, it's his son Simon taking it down the track."

Thanks to Rob Loaring of I.C.E. Automotive who posted his thoughts: "I spent today with Simon and his team and it went pretty well. The clutch was too tight on the first lap and it wouldn't come out of reverse but the second went pretty smoothly. A couple of blower pulleys and some counterweight and they'll be on their way. It's been a long time coming and I suspect they'll all sleep well tonight!"

Our best wishes to Simon and the team who plan to progress further in the near future.

You can see the team's Facebook reel of the awesome-sounding car by clicking here.

Shernon Martis is heading towards the UK championship.
3rd June 2024

Thanks to Remco Scheelings for sending this article from Benjamin Wefer, a Dutch reporter/photographer about Shernon Martis. Benjamin writes:

After building and testing for several years, Shernon thinks he is ready for action. His dream is to compete in Super Street Bike, and he is close to realizing that dream. But, for now, he wants to familiarize himself with the bike to feel how it handles on the track and test its reliability during an entire season. A few days from now, Shernon will commence his journey in the Competition Bike (comp bike) class and attempt to win the British championship! Before going to Santapod Raceway, we took a moment with him to reflect on his journey and expectations for the 2024 season.

His journey and dream of running Super Street Bike started before the pandemic. He knew it would be a financial and mental challenge and needed to increase his skills to close the technical gaps. I have learned a lot in the past few years but still have more to learn. But I will only get where I want to be if I spend time on the track and not only in the garage. And I need more than just testing to help me get there. I miss the adrenaline rush I get during the competition! Santapod is a great track and the only one within reach to give me the experience and exposure I need to move forward.

While he is preparing to start his journey in the Competition Bike category, we took the opportunity to ask some more detailed questions to get a glimpse of his expectations for this season.

With two bikes tailored for a quarter-mile track in his possession, the question arises: which one will Shernon deploy this season? 'The nitrous bike is our safety net,' he explains. 'Our primary focus is to maximize the turbo bike's runs for familiarization, data collection, and to chart our ascent to the Super Street Bike category.'

But what made Shernon choose the Competition Bike category, and what makes racing in this class so captivating? 'My ultimate goal is to reach the Super Street Bike (SSB) category,' he explains. 'However, the current data indicates that I will need to be more competitive to be competitive in Super Street Bike. On the other hand, the data also showed us that it would be too quick for the 8.50 bike index class, leaving me with only one option: Competition Bike. And we know this will be challenging, but we are up for the challenge!

'Have there been any modifications to the bike over the winter?' Shernon shares, 'No, I haven't made any modifications to the bike. I simply rebuilt the engine, and it still has its original internals. However, I took a different approach to the rebuild. Instead of seeking someone to do it for me, I sought someone who could pass on the knowledge of building such an engine. Stefan Schmidt (Schmidt Performance Racing) has enhanced my understanding of engine rebuilding. Steward Crane and Michael Piggot (Wrapspeed Racing) have guided me on the dyno and taught me how to tune my engine. And Jake Mechaell JKE Race Works) has been my on-track mentor, helping me interpret the bike's data and fine-tune my performance.'

'When will your debut at the British championship be, and what are your expectations?' The test runs we did at the beginning of the year look promising, and we are debuting during the Sportsman Nationals, which will be held from 7 to 9 June 2024. I'm eagerly looking forward to this year's season and expect to be competitive. I'm not aiming to end up at the bottom of the list, but we will see how far we can go. As long as the team is satisfied with the results, I am happy.'

'I am deeply grateful to our Lord for his guidance and strength,' Shernon humbly acknowledges. 'I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to my family, who always had my back, supported my dreams, and allowed me to pursue my passion. My team, who believe in me and constantly push me to improve, are the backbone of my journey. And, of course, to all the fans out there—your unwavering support is what makes Motorsport thrive!'

Shernon and the Speshi Racing Team will start a new adventure. A Suzuki Hayabusa turbo with a lot of potential is on the schedule. Only time will tell what the future will bring.
